A cold silence settles between us.
"I'm sorry," I add. I tried to convince myself that what we had could work, that over time I would learn to forget her, but it was a mistake. I never stopped loving her. And being with you, without being able to give you everything you deserve, makes me feel like a miserable person.
Her eyes well up, but she doesn't let a single tear fall. She's strong. Stronger than I imagined.
"How long has it been?" She asked me in a sharp tone.
"For a long time... she and I were in a relationship three years ago.
"Is that why you said we were a couple in front of her? To hurt her?"
"I'm sorry... I have no excuses. Yes, I said it to hurt her, but also because I wanted to move on. But I lied to myself. I wanted to believe I could close that chapter."
