The call ended. I stood there for a long moment, phone still pressed to my ear, listening to nothing. When I lowered it, Elias was watching me carefully, like he might need to catch me if my legs gave out. “He’s on his way?” he asked. “Yes.” “Good.” Nothing about this felt good. Time did something strange after that. It stretched and folded in on itself, minutes bleeding together until I couldn’t tell how long I’d been standing outside that door.
