For how long though.
I didn’t realize I had said it out loud until the woman in the cell across from me flinched.
Her eyes widened, not in surprise, but in fear.
Too much fear. The kind that doesn’t come from a question, but from recognition, like she had already seen the end of that thought before I even finished forming it.
She leaned closer to the bars, her fingers tightening around the metal so hard her knuckles went white, her breathing uneven like she had been crying for a long time and hadn’t quite managed to stop, like her body had forgotten how to do anything else but shake.
“Are you going to do it?”
Her voice broke halfway through the sentence.
