The really disturbing part was that I couldn't even convince myself he was pretending.

Anything.
Nobody was that thoughtful all the time. Nobody was that patient. Nobody could possibly wake up every morning and decide to be a decent human being without eventually slipping up.
Except Elias kept refusing to cooperate with that theory.
