MARTHA POV His eyes went very dark. Green still, but deeper now. Forest before a storm. Forest where smart women did not walk alone unless they were secretly hoping to be caught. But that made no sense. Artificial light shouldn’t change the eye colour. We were only inches apart. Close enough that I could smell the scent of his shampoo, so close to mine. Close enough that I could feel his breath against my lips. Bad idea. Very bad idea. I wanted to kiss him. The thought was not gentle or shy or theoretical. It arrived fully formed, sat down in my chest, crossed its legs, and refused to leave. I wanted to grab the front of that stupid black T-shirt, drag him across the tiny café table, and find out if his mouth felt as dangerous as it looked. Consequences could wait. Insanity
