Chapter 10: A Secret Beneath Her Heart Part Two

1044 Words
That night, just like every night for the past week, the betrayal pain came. It did not knock. It did not warn her. It tore through her. Julia was already curled on her bed when the first wave hit. Her breath left her lungs in a sharp gasp as the bond flared violently in her chest. Somewhere across the territory, Jason was with Willow again—strengthening the alliance, strengthening the illusion of unity. And the mate bond made sure Julia felt it. The tearing sensation spread from her chest down to her abdomen, sharp and merciless. Her wolf whimpered inside her mind, claws scraping against the invisible walls of their shared consciousness. Julia gripped the sheets tightly. “No, I will not hurt my pup.” she whispered to herself. Her claws itched to extend. Her body remembered the relief that came from raking her skin open, from letting physical pain distract from the bond’s torment. But her hands moved instead to her stomach. Protective. Even in agony, her instinct shifted. She would not harm the life inside her. She clenched her jaw, forcing herself to endure the pain without carving it out of her flesh. Sweat dampened her hair. Her breathing turned uneven. Her muscles trembled from the effort of restraint. “It’s okay,” she whispered faintly to the small life beneath her palm. “I won’t hurt you. I won’t.” The second wave hit harder. Her vision blurred. Her wolf cried out inside her mind, the sound raw and desperate. “He is claiming her again,” her wolf whimpered. “Strengthening their bond.” Julia squeezed her eyes shut, tears slipping down her temples. “Hold on,” she murmured to both herself and her wolf. “We have to hold on.” Minutes stretched like hours. The pain eventually dulled, retreating to a deep, throbbing ache instead of the violent ripping it had been. When it finally faded enough for her to breathe normally again, Julia lay still, exhausted beyond measure. Her hand remained on her stomach. Alive. Still alive. She turned inward to her wolf. “How long?” Julia asked softly inside their shared space. “How long before our body cannot handle this anymore?” Her wolf lay curled in the shadows of her mind, fur dull, breathing shallow. “I do not know,” her wolf answered weakly. “Each night it grows worse. We are weakening.” Julia swallowed hard. “We need to decide,” she said. “And we need to decide fast.” Silence lingered between them. “We can leave,” Julia continued. “We can reject Jason. Reject this pack.” Her wolf flinched at the thought. “But our pup,” her wolf whispered. “I am tired, Julia. So tired. I do not know if I have the strength to shield it from the shock of rejection.” Julia closed her eyes, feeling the weight of that truth. Rejection would send a violent shock through the bond. Through their body. Through their wolf. The healer’s words echoed in her mind. Miscarriage. Risk of death. But then other truths followed. If she stayed— The betrayal pain would continue. Night after night. If Jason discovered the pregnancy— He would not let her leave. The pup would belong to Silver Fang. To the alpha’s bloodline. To the alliance. And Willow— Julia’s jaw tightened. If Willow found out an omega carried the alpha’s true mate bond pup, there would be no safe corner in this territory for them. Willow would not risk her reign. She would not risk her future. She would protect her title at any cost. “We do not have a choice,” Julia said firmly. Her wolf lifted her head slightly. “If we stay, the betrayal pain will kill us slowly,” Julia continued. “If the alpha finds out before we are ready, he will cage us with kindness and duty. If the luna finds out… she will see our pup as a threat.” Her voice hardened. “She will eliminate that threat.” Her wolf trembled. “She might try to kill us,” her wolf whispered. “Yes,” Julia said. “And this time, no one will protect us.” Silence filled the space between them. The night outside was still. Deceptively peaceful. Inside, everything felt like a ticking clock. “We leave,” Julia said finally. Her wolf hesitated. “And the rejection?” her wolf asked. Julia’s throat tightened. “We will endure it.” Her wolf let out a small, broken sound. “What if we do not survive it?” Julia’s hand pressed more firmly over her stomach. “Then at least we would have tried to protect our pup.” Her voice shook but did not falter. “I would rather risk death fighting for it… than die slowly watching him choose another every night.” Her wolf was quiet for a long time. Then, slowly— “You are stronger than I am,” her wolf said softly. Julia almost laughed bitterly. “No,” she replied. “I am just more desperate.” She inhaled deeply, steadying herself. “We prepare,” she continued. “We gather what we need. We wait for the right moment. And when we leave this territory, we reject him far enough that his wolf cannot immediately track us.” Her wolf nodded weakly. “Will you miss him?” her wolf asked quietly. Julia’s eyes filled with tears she did not let fall. “Yes.” That was the cruelest part. She still loved him. But love was no longer enough to keep her alive. The mate bond pulsed faintly in her chest, a constant reminder of what she was about to sever. “Rest,” Julia whispered to her wolf. “We need whatever strength we can gather.” Her wolf curled tighter around the faint warmth that represented their pup. Julia lay back on the bloodstained sheets, staring at the ceiling. For the first time in weeks, her thoughts were not consumed by pain. They were consumed by escape. And the terrifying courage it would require to choose survival over love.
