His voice cracked.
“She wrote about how much she loves me. How she’d do anything—no matter what—just to make me better again.”
He swallowed hard.
“And she wrote about that morning… how I gave her a hard time. How my words hurt her.” His jaw tightened. “She said hearing what was wrong with me hurt her three times more than it hurt me. But what hurt the most—”
His breath faltered.
“—was that I didn’t see her sacrifices at all.”
Jamie sucked in a breath.
“That’s when it hit me. I wasn’t the victim.” He shook his head. “I was the selfish one. The difficult one.”
He looked up, eyes shining.
“When she came home that night, I ran to her. Hugged her so tight I thought she might break. I cried. I begged her to forgive me.”
