“Valerie, what do you mean? How is it your fault?” Celeste asked for the third time, her voice sharp and gaze fixed on me.
I didn’t know what to say.
Even if I wanted to come clean about the situation, I would be implicating Patrick. I didn’t want to do that. And I wasn’t even sure that it was actually my fault.
She took a few steps closer, her breathing uneven.
“What are you talking about? Why are you quiet? Who is on the phone?” Her voice cracked slightly as she asked. “Valerie?”
