I had to take a break, to think of something else, to look somewhere else.
Not because I wanted to.
Because if I didn’t, I was going to lose it too fast—and I had waited too damn long for that.

Spread out under me, breathing like she couldn’t catch it, body still trembling from the last wave I had dragged out of her, her wrists still caught in my hand like she hadn’t even tried to pull free again.
