A week passed with no new attacks and no strange calls. The apartment felt safer. I went out almost every day to submit applications in person. Some mornings I felt tired but I kept going. One morning I had a promising interview. I wore my best simple dress and took the bus early. The law firm office was clean and professional. Mrs. Carter, a woman in her forties, met me in a small meeting room. “Tell me about yourself, Elena,” she said with a warm smile. “I just finished my law degree at Columbia,” I said. “I worked hard for strong grades. I had internships and I worked at a diner to pay my bills. I am reliable and I learn fast. I want to work in family law because I know what it is like to fight alone. I want to help people who feel stuck.” Mrs. Carter nodded and wrote something down
