Sofia’s eyes brimmed with tears, her face pale with terror. “Elena, please! Don’t go with them! I can’t watch them take you. Fight back! We can fight together!”
“Shut your mouth!” the man holding me snarled at Sofia. He laughed, a low, ugly sound. “Too late for that. Boss wants you, Elena. Move faster or I’ll make that cut on your friend’s neck look like nothing.”
I twisted against his hold. “Let her go! She has nothing to do with this. Your boss can have me, but leave Sofia alone!”
The second man shoved me forward. “Keep talking and we’ll cut you both. Boss’s orders are clear. You’re coming with us.”
We were almost at the door when fast footsteps pounded up the stairs outside. A voice shouted loud and fierce, “Stop! Let her go right now!”
