The world was ringing, loud and painful in her ears. Her arm twisted beneath her at a horrible angle, bolts of agony shooting all the way to her shoulder. Her head throbbed like someone was inside her skull with a hammer, pounding to break out. Every part of her was heavy, waterlogged, and trembling. A low groan rumbled against her cheek. Her senses crawled back, piece by piece. She was lying on the cold, wet ground, crushed under Callan’s limp weight. His body was sprawled over hers, soaked with rain and something thick and warm.
