Jake watched her sleep. He wanted nothing more than to climb into the hospital bed with her, to wrap himself around her and never let go. But the doctor had been firm. Too many wires and monitors surrounded her, fragile lifelines he couldn’t risk disturbing. So he stayed anchored to the chair at her bedside, fists clenched on his knees, every muscle locked tight.
