The property barely settled after the last attack and nobody bothered pretending otherwise because tension still hung thich across the yard while men rotated watches along the fences and headlights stayed aimed toward the treeline like everybody expected another hit before sunrise. They were right. I sat on the clubhouse steps cleaning dirt off the blade Raze returned to me while distant voices carried across the property. The metal felt colder in my hands tonight for some reason. Drake walked out of the garage while wiping grease from his knuckles with a rag and jhis eyes found me immediately like they always did now. “You sleep at all?” He asked. “Couple of hours.” I said. “That means no.” He said. “You keeping score?” I shrugged while sliding the back back into his sheath.
