"Don't lie to me," Liam said, stepping fully into the room now, crowding toward her with the same familiar intimidation he'd employed weeks earlier in that narrow stairwell. "I've had quite enough of your excuses, Callie. Enough of your stalling, enough of whatever protection you think you've found here with the general."
"That's enough," Chase said, voice suddenly hard and commanding, stepping deliberately between them, placing himself directly in Liam's path toward Callie. "You will not speak to her that way."
Liam's eyes widened slightly with surprise, clearly not expecting such direct intervention. "General, this is a private family matter. I'd advise you not to involve yourself further."
