It was quite common actually, due to heirs being targets for assassination, kidnappings and ransoms, some got stolen or just disappeared themselves, not wanting to be part of the goings-on in the Royal world. Though mostly threats came from others of royal-blood, a King or Queen's sibling who were jealous and wanted the throne for themselves.
Made things happen so that they could seat their own child on the throne, and take leadership of the Kingdom for themselves when their King had no heirs left, treachery could be rife inside the other
