I wanted to tell him that I believed him...I really wanted to. There was no doubt in my mind that Lucas would do everything in his power to protect me if the issues fell beyond my own capabilities. However...
After that terrifying encounter with whatever that creature was out in the woods, I wasn’t so sure such a promise could even be kept.
Something must have been given away in my expression because Lucas’s features grew sharp. His jaw clenched as he peered down at me. He narrowed his eyes; his voice was laced with a biting tone.
“You don’t believe me, do you?” he questioned accusingly.
I bit the corner of my lip. “I believe that you would do everything in your power to protect me,” I clarified.
