Eden went very still.
For a second, I thought I had said too much.
Then her fingers brushed over mine.
We stood like that for a few seconds, the four of us still linked, still glowing at the edges, watching the facility burn itself into a crater. We waited to see if anything would crawl out. If some hybrid, some doctor, some half-made nightmare would drag itself from the fire and give us an excuse to keep going.
Nothing did.
Only smoke rose from the ground.
A cloud of fire and ash, roaring into a night that had become way too silent.
