CHAPTER 10
Lyra POV
I woke to the sound of the crowd outside, their voices increasing in an unruly chant. "The King has fallen."
What was wrong?
I stood from the bed, wondering where the noise came from. I moved to the window to check what exactly was going on. A gasp escaped my mouth when I saw hundreds of wolves, gathered with banners in their hands.
"The King has fallen," I read. "Execute the temptress."
What were they trying to do and why was no one stopping them?
"Your Majesty," Corvin called, entering the room. I turned to face him. "The council demands a public statement." He said.
The council again? What was their request this time?
"Saying what?" I grumbled.
His eyes widened but he blinked sharply. "That you'll execute the woman." He replied.
I knew it. The report from the last meeting had made them result in causing the young wolves to protest. I wouldn't give them what they want, their plight won't work.
"No," I shook my head.
"Your Majesty." He called in shock while I had a stern look. "Then they'll risk civil war." He replied.
I stared at him pondering on what he said. I clearly stated my intention in the last meeting, but the Elders wouldn't give up that easily. If such acts persist, then a civil war could break out.
I had stop whatever the council was planning. That might as well help my mission.
"Summon the pack. Now." I demanded. The corvin stared at me, he seemed to wonder what I had in mind but he couldn't question.
"Yes your Majesty," Corvin said. He bowed before stepping out.
I made to step out of the room, then I recalled the last discussion about my robe. I walked back to Marlik's wardrobe and picked a better one, it looked perfect on my body than the earlier one.
I checked my look in the mirror, tossing Malrik's hair perfectly in the mirror. I nodded, satisfied with the look. A perfect one.
A last glance at the mirror, I stepped out of the room, heading to the throne room. I could hear the young wolves still protesting on my way as I approached the throne room. I saw Malrik in my body being escorted by guards.
I stopped on my track, while the guards also stopped bowing their heads in my presence. I stared at Malrik but he only stared back before looking away. I made to move after a moment but a servant approached me with wine in a tray.
"For you, your highness." She said, offering me the wine.
I stared at the goblet, at first wondering what the wine was meant for. It was probably done for the Wolf king to refresh before approaching the council.
I had to take it, to avoid any other suspicion.
I raised the goblet to drink when I heard Malrik in my body scream from where he was.
"Don't drink that!" He yelled, with widened eyes. He lunges, shoving it away.
The wine spilled, the goblet fell with the remaining content pouring on the floor, hissing and smoking.
Poison.
I stood still, startled. I stared at Malrik who also stared back at me with widened eyes.
"The Moon Goddess demands it!" The servant said after being seized by the guards. "The false king must die!" She yelled, struggling from their grip as they led her away.
Chaos erupt among the crowd. Everyone began murmuring. They all seemed to be surprised by what had happened, one would believe everyone present there was clueless about such an act.
At that moment, I wasn't looking at anyone else. My gut twisted violently as my gazes were on Malrik in my body who stared back at me.
"Stay with me," I muttered, not minding the eyes present there. "Don't leave," I insisted and he nodded, standing before me.
I signalled to the guards to stand down and leave. They glanced at Malrik in my body, almost hoping I would ask them to take him with them. I nodded after a while before stepping out.
I walked to the throne room while Malrik walked behind me. I stopped in front of the throne, glanced at Malrik who stared back at me. His expression changed to a cold stare and I spoke.
"You just saved me," I said.
He scoffed. "If my body dies while you're in it, I'm stuck like this forever." He said. "I had to,"
"So now you care about my survival?" I asked.
"My survival." He corrected.
Seriously? I scoffed.
He moved closer to me while I stood still, unable to move. He walked past me to the throne. He took a seat beside the throne and I stared at him.
I waited to see what he was up to but he made no move and he shut his eyes.
What was he doing?
"You should take a nap." He muttered, his eyes shut. "My body needs to be in good health." He added and I scoffed.
He only cared about his body.
I glanced around before walking to the throne. I sat beside him and I tried to adjust myself properly but I bumped into him, silently causing our body to touch.
My throat dried up instantly and he opened his eyes to stare back at him. His eyes glued on mine and mine on his. That was it, the feelings came rushing again.
I made to move but he did first. "You should be careful." He said, shutting his eyes again.
I nodded and looked away.
I tried getting some sleep but that was impossible with him close to me. Every brush sends sparks but I shut my eyes not wanting to meet with his eyes.
I heard a movement later that night, I opened my eyes lazily to see what was going on. I couldn't shut my eyes again when I saw Malrik undress in my body.
My eyes darted to my lush hips, and I traced upward to the-
"Stop looking at me that way." Malrik cautioned, when he caught me staring.
"Like what?" I asked, faking a frown.
"Like you want to devour me." He replied, my throat went completely dry when he said that.
How could he say it that way?
"I don't—"
"Yeah, you'd better not." He warned. "Because indefinitely don't want you."
"Liar," I scoffed. "You want me." I teased.
He rushed toward me at a quick pace. I almost moved back but I sat still.
He stopped few inches away from me. "You're wrong." He snarled but I decided to play along.
"Admit it," I said but he pulled my wrist, causing me to gasp in shock.
"This isn't real." He glared. "It's just a curse." He added, dropping my hand forcefully.
"Gosh," I muttered. "Is it?" I asked but he only stepped back.
"Goodnight, Your Majesty."
He stepped away. Threw a glance at me then walked away. I watched him leave but I didn't make any move to stop him. I couldn't do that anyway.
I sat in that position, awake all through the night. The protest chants echoed in the pack, making it impossible for me to sleep. I recalled how Malrik had stopped the servant from poisoning me.
Was the council behind this?
The goddess instruction played in my head once again. Destroy the council. She wanted me to destroy the council, could it be because of all this?
But how do I do find out that when she's not giving me any chance to do so?
"Find out for yourself." I recalled her words.
I shut my eyes, pondering on the best decision to make but none seemed to be coming. I opened my eyes to stare at the throne room entrance again and a thought crossed my mind.
A shocking, crazy thought.
