(Caroline's POV)
"Charlie and Rose are not a burden." I say before I can stop myself. "How can you even say that?"
Helen turns back to Jason. "Jason, I promise that's not what I meant. You know I'm not good with words. I might be a bad mother, but I would never despise my own daughter. You know that, right?"
Jason frowns, and his gaze goes to me, before returning to Helen's. I can see the distrust in it, but Helen's tearful expression must soften his heart, because he says, "she probably didn't mean it in that way."
I open my mouth to give him a piece of my mind, shocked that he would even take her side on this, when Helen interrupts me, and says, "can I spend some time with Rose? Maybe take her to the park?" And swallow my words.
