Mrs. Taylor called me that afternoon.
I knew she had spoken to the detective before she said anything.
“They found her car.”
Her voice sounded wrong. Too controlled, as though she had spent the last hour holding every emotion perfectly still because moving one might knock all the others over.
“I know.”
“He said you knew.”
“I found out this morning.”
Mrs. Taylor breathed into the phone.
I moved into my office and shut the door. Nixx glanced toward me from the shop floor but didn’t follow.
“The detective told me they didn’t find blood.”
“No obvious blood during the initial processing.”
“I know. That’s what he said too.”
She was doing what I had done.
Trying to turn one fact into an answer.
“He asked me about some things they found inside.”
