I gave a small nod and held his gaze for a second. That answer fit too easily, like he’d said it before. It didn’t change anything, but it told me how he saw this. I tipped my head toward my car after that. “What happens to that?” I asked. “Not your concern,” he said. That made sense. He stepped closer then, not crowding me, just taking the space he needed to keep control. The gun stayed low, never raised, but never out of the moment either.
