Holt called while I was still at the compound with Mira after we finished dealing with the Jessa situation. Jessa was handled, safe, and out of the way for now, staying with her sister until the rest of it got cleaned up. That part was under control, and I had already decided how it was going to end. None of that was what had Mira standing across the room from me like she didn’t trust a word coming out of my mouth.
She hadn’t said much since we got back. She didn’t need to. The distance she kept did enough on its own, quiet, controlled, and deliberate in a way that told me she was thinking instead of reacting. She knew something didn’t add up, even if she couldn’t place it yet, and that was exactly why I stepped away before answering the call.
