“Calmer is one word for it,” I said. Her smile softened. “How have you been feeling?” “Tired,” I said. “But better.” “No more bleeding?” “No.” “Good,” she said, looking at the file. “That’s what we want to hear.” I let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding. The doctor asked a few more questions, then washed her hands and moved toward the machine. “Let’s take a look and make sure the baby is doing well.” My stomach turned, but Ridge was already beside me before I could move. I lay back carefully and lifted my shirt enough for the scan. The gel was cold when she placed it on my stomach. I flinched a little, and Ridge’s hand closed around mine.
