The baby moved under my hand. I smiled before I could stop myself. “She’s awake,” I said. Ridge’s eyes dropped to my stomach. He stood and came around the table, then crouched beside my chair. His hand covered mine carefully. For a second, nothing happened, and then she moved again. His face went still. Not cold still. Wonder still. “There she is,” he said quietly. My throat tightened. He stayed like that for a while, one hand on my stomach, the other on the arm of my chair. The room was quiet around us. Outside, the compound was already moving, but in here it felt like the world had stepped back and given us this one small moment.
