I woke to the muted scrape of wheels beyond the bedroom door.
For a few seconds, I remained still beneath the blankets, taking inventory before attempting to move. My head no longer throbbed, and the room stayed steady when I opened my eyes. Exhaustion still weighed heavily through my body, but it felt ordinary now rather than dangerous.
Thoren was awake beside me.
He lay on his side with one arm draped across my waist, watching me with the careful attention of someone who had spent the entire night checking that I continued to breathe.
“How long have you been staring at me?” I asked.
“Long enough to know you slept peacefully for almost four hours.”
“That was not an answer.”
“It was the answer you were getting.”
