I had to leave Japan for a while because my mother was sick and I needed to be there to take care of her. But after two months, she was finally better.
Initially, she didn’t want me to leave again.
But she realized how short and precious life was. She knew I needed to spend time with the kids because I had missed so much already.
“You deserve to be with them. Since you refused to fight for custody, the least you can do is to be present. I’ll see you during the holidays.”
Her voice replayed in my head as I stepped out of the airport and made my way to the car that was waiting for me.
