I stared at the phone while I tried to make sense of the dates. Laura had been following Amelia long before Charles claimed he'd hired her because of Amelia's return to New York. Either Charles had lied about when he hired Laura, or someone else had hired her before him. We needed to know which one it was.
"How far back does Laura's name appear?"
"Almost three years."
"Who was paying her then?"
