Mary Ann’s POV The arrow came from the trees before I understood Modric’s warning. One moment, I was walking toward the waiting guards with the memorial cards held against my chest. The next, Modric struck me from the side. His arm wrapped around my waist, and the force of his body threw both of us toward the ground. I hit the grass hard. The cards scattered around us. A sharp sound tore through the night. Then Modric grunted. Not anger. Pain. For one confused second, I lay beneath him staring at the dark sky.
