I’d been home for two nights.
Three nights of Mom’s cooking, Ethan’s teasing, and Mia’s late-night gossip session. Mia refused to return to her dorm because I was around and instead went to classes from home.
It was a Thursday afternoon. The house was quiet because Ethan was at school while Mia was at a friend’s place after her class in the morning. It was just me, my mom, and my dad at home. He hadn’t gone to work because he wasn’t feeling too well and Mom stayed home to take care of him.
I was on my way back to my room after lazing on the couch all day when I saw my parents’ room door ajar.
I wanted to knock, go in, and check in on them, but my mom’s voice stopped me.
“She’s not herself, Tim.”
My dad replied but his voice was too low for me to catch it.
