Sitting in Matias’ office watching him pace back and forth while I continue to eat my meal, I wait for him to explain his reasoning as to why he came and got me from the kitchen three hours before I was expecting him to. Strangely, I don’t feel threatened by him like I used to in the past, so I just treat this as another excuse to hide away from Kendrik and Victoria and whatever it is they have planned for me.
“Ember, I’ve been commanded to protect you,” Matias finally states, turning to face me. Dumbfounded, I swallow my bite of potato wedges and look at Matias to see if he is joking.
“By who?” I finally ask, watching him look down at his feet before returning his gaze to me.
