For a heartbeat, the world was only sound. The thunder of the titan’s foot settling into the earth. The echo rolling through the valley like a cosmic drumbeat. Snow settling in a soft hiss around us. My pulse pounding in my ears as I clung to Jax’s arm, still trying to understand that I was alive. Then everything went silent. Not quiet. Not peaceful. Silent. As if the world took a breath and forgot how to exhale. I pushed myself upright, trembling, Jax’s hands steadying me as he rose beside me. The cold air bit my skin in sharp little teeth. I lifted my face toward the sky. And froze. The moon was gone. Not clouded. Not eclipsed. Gone. A thick veil of blackness covered the sky where the moon should have glowed. It looked like someone had carved a hole into the heavens. No light.
