I read my father's message three times before calling him. He answered on the fourth ring, sounding annoyed that I had disturbed him. I asked what he meant by threatening my mother. He told me I was making everything more difficult than necessary.
"What are you going to do to her?"
"Your mother has enough problems without you dragging this family through a scandal."
"Then why did you threaten her?"
"Because you need to understand that your actions affect other people."
I wanted to throw my phone across the room. My mother had never defended me, but that didn't mean I wanted anything happening to her. I knew my father was using her to frighten me. He had discovered another way to make me feel responsible for his decisions.
