After Alice left, I slept better than I had in weeks.
No nightmares. No waking at every sound in the corridor. For nearly eight uninterrupted hours, Moonreign and its problems ceased to exist.
Naturally, the peace did not survive breakfast.
Velvet entered while I was fastening my earrings.
"Alpha Kaelen is waiting for you in the conference room."
"He can continue waiting."
"Normally, I would agree." She came closer and lowered her voice. "But something rather extraordinary happened last night. The wedding contract has become the most discussed document in Moonreign."
I looked at her in the mirror. "Why?"
"Lady Elvira mistook the initial deposit for the total cost. The complete package is ten times the amount they budgeted."
"How much?"
"Twenty million."
