My entire world shattered into a million pieces when Emma spoke those words.
It felt like a sharp blade had pierced my heart and left a gaping wound.
Time slowed down. My mind raced. The blood in my veins turned cold.
I didn't want to believe what I was hearing. I wondered, for a split second, if Emma was lying. If perhaps she was making it up in the hopes of getting rid of me and keeping me away from the child, but I saw the raw emotion in her eyes. I saw the pain, the anguish, the emptyness. There was no way that she was pretending. Those emotions were all real. Only someone that has really felt them could truly show them to another.
