Their voices trailed as they turned another corner, seemingly heading into the kitchen together.
When they were gone, I scurried forward and ducked into Jake’s office. There, sitting at the top of the trash can as I had suspected, was the invitation to Claire’s ceremony. It was torn in two pieces but I held them together to read.

Holding onto the pieces, I rushed out of the room and back upstairs to my room.
