Damien’s POV
“It’s not because of Annette,” I said firmly, annoyed that she would even make that suggestion. Like I needed more reasons to not want to marry Claire than the obvious. “It is because of Amelia, and what you had done to her.”
In the back of my mind, I thought that, if Annette really was Amelia, than perhaps it was about Annette after all. But I would be damned before I said that out loud.
I would never give Claire a new target, not after what she had done to Amelia. Even standing in the same room with Claire made me unbelievably angry.
For Annette’s sake, and for my own, I silently vowed to do whatever I needed to do to keep Annette away from Claire and vice versa.
I had failed Amelia, but I would not fail Annette in the same way, whether she truly was Amelia or not.
