“I’ve made terrible mistakes,” I said. “But I’ve learned from them. I will not make those same mistakes again.” “No,” Jake spat. “You’ll make new ones.” “Both of you, please go into the waiting room while I run some tests on Amelia,” Eve said. “And while you are there, both of you can attempt to calm down. Raised tempers will not aid Amelia in any way.” Jake and I glared at each other, but neither of us were willing to go against doctor’s orders, especially when it was Amelia who needed the care. I gestured for Jake to go first. He hesitated a long moment, but then finally moved. I walked out behind him. We found his parents, Martin and Lillian, seated just outside the doors of the emergency room, waiting in a pair of chairs. They stood when they saw us and met us nearer to the door.
