As Massimo's lawyer finished speaking, everyone in the court fell silent. Elena couldn't blame anyone—the idea that the Mafia King hadn't tried to kill her but save her was something no one would ordinarily expect. "Think about," Mr. Barbieri continued. "Really think about it! You're surrounded in a room of over a hundred people, all of them calling for one woman's head!" Mr. Barbieri very carefully paced across the floor, staying far away from Massimo himself. "If you protest the game of deadly chance, there's plenty of men who can shut you up and make sure the game is played. But if you remove the deadly bullet and fill the gun with only blanks, then the problem is solved, isn't it?" Mr. Barbieri asked. "It's the only non-violent way anyone could fully prevent murder from happening!"
