The ride back from the university felt much shorter than the drive there.
Perhaps because every person inside Mason's car was carrying a different kind of worry.
Sage barely noticed the scenery slipping past her window. The announcement from the auditorium replayed relentlessly inside her head.
Mandatory blood screening for every student.
Every member of staff. She tightened her grip on the strap of her backpack until her knuckles turned pale.
Across the front seat, Mason glanced at her through the rear-view mirror more than once. She caught him every single time, yet neither of them acknowledged it. Whatever comfort he'd given her the night before had disappeared the instant the university doctor announced the compulsory testing.
She'd gone quiet….far too quiet.
