Hijack
I wake slowly with my head pounding.
I groan. What the f**k happened to me?
“Easy, Lane. I’m guessing you have a nasty headache.”
I recognize that voice, but it’s a lot softer than I’m used to hearing.
“Yana?”
“Yeah, it’s me. Try not to move,” she says and puts something cold on my forehead. That feels good.
“Why can’t I see?” I ask, feeling like I’m about to panic.
“Mom said the light would make your head hurt worse, so we’ve got your eyes covered.”
“What happened? Where am I?”
“You’re in the Academy hospital. You were ambushed. You fell and hit your head. Mom says you have a concussion,” she stops, her voice catching.
I reach out and find her hand.
“Don’t worry about me, Phisher. I’ve got a hard head,” I say. I don’t like hearing her cry.
